It is realy nice walk from centre. You are going in beautiful small streets and when you get up, you have to pay four euros, but is worth it.
So beautiful views you can see And it was beautiful to get perfect free book with info about Pompeii. I like pizza, but cake was horrible. Amazingly preserved. Try to spend a whole day with a comfortable shoe and enough water. Buying entrance tickets in advance through official web site is advised. Witnessing the historic daily life, the villas-architecture-city planning and all remains was very interesting. Definetely must be visited when around the area incl.
There is a train that stops just outside one of the entrances to the ancient city- this train is a local train called a Circumvesuviana Train, and the stop you want to get off on is 'Pompei SCAVI' - not anything else! On the day I went the train was 40 minutes late which was absolutely ridiculous but unfortunately there is not much you can do about that! The ruins of the city of Pompeii is really a place you need to go to.
There are pictures hanging inside a small exhibition inside the city's still standing amphitheatre and there are pictures of how the city was first found - it looked as if someone had just vacated some of the houses, the pictures depicted a city so beautiful. There are some contemporary art pieces installed throughout the city here and there within Pompeii and I thought they were really fitting. But fear not! If you have a Italian phone plan with internet available to you, google maps is very helpful in guiding you around the city and to the special spots just search for them or I found the construction workers doing work on stability work on the fragile parts of the city are very nice and familiar with the layout and are more than happy to point you in the right direction.
There is one obvious main road in this ancient city and as long as you follow it, you will eventually find your way back to the entrance. I was amazed at how much there was to see on this site. So much preserved and left natural. Tour guides are very knowledgeable. I was surprised at the size of this ancient city. It's a must see! Do a tour or follow a guide book.
