Wrestler Antim Panghal On Asian Games 2023 Selection: For the Asian Games 2023, the appointed committee of the Indian Olympic Association has given direct entry from India to female wrestler Vinesh Phogat in 53 kg weight category and male wrestler Bajrang Punia in 65 kg weight category. Now the current Under-20 world champion wrestler Aakhal Panghal has raised questions on sending Vinesh Phogat directly to the Asian Games.
Apart from Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, the rest of the wrestlers will have to undergo trials for the Asian Games on July 22 and 23. On this, 19-year-old Panghal, a resident of Hisar, Haryana, questioned on what basis Vinesh Phogat got the direct entry. Last Panghal also plays in the 53 kg weight category.
In a video released by news agency ANI, Panghal said, “Vinesh Phogat has got a direct entry for the Asian Games, while she has not even practiced for the last one year. He has no achievements in the last one year.”
She said, “Last year in the Junior World Championship, I won the gold medal and I became the first Indian woman wrestler to do so. I won a silver in the Asian Championship in 2023, but Vinesh has no achievements to show for it in the last one year.”
Finally Panghal said, “Sakshi Malik won a medal in Olympics, he is also not being sent. What is special about Vinesh that he is being sent. Just get the trial done. I am not saying that I alone can defeat her, but there are many other girls who can defeat her.”
Got cheated earlier also: Last Panghal
Lastly, Panghal said, “When the trials were being held for the Commonwealth Games, I played matches against her (Vinesh Phogat) and even then, I was cheated by the officials. I said no one, I will try to qualify for the Olympics through the Asian Games. But now they are saying that they will send Vinesh.
Last Panghal further said, “They are also saying that the one who will go for the Asian Games will also go for the World Championship and the one who will win the medal in the World Championship will go for the Olympics. We too have been training hard for years, so what about us? Should we give up wrestling? Tell us on what basis he (Vinesh) is being sent.
