Glenn McGrath on Ashes Series: Former great fast bowler Glenn McGrath believes that if Australia wins the second Test at Lord’s, Pat Cummins will achieve the feat of winning an Ashes series in England, which even World Cup winning captains like Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke could not do. Australia has taken a 1-0 lead in the series after winning the first Test.
Glenn McGrath told ‘BBC’, “The last time a team won the Ashes after coming back from behind was in 2005. I was part of that team. The situation is the same now. If Australia wins the second Test, then the Ashes will be decided. Almost will happen. There will be a lot of pressure on England, because it will be difficult for them to return if they lose.
Australia last won a Test series in England in 2001. McGrath said, “Australia have a golden chance to win the Ashes in England after 2001. Cummins can achieve what Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke could not.”
He said, “Captains always lead from the front and Cummins did the same in the first Test.” He also praised England’s aggressive game and said, they are aggressive and positive too. When you play without fear, then only you know how capable you are.
England don’t have depth like Australia – Tim Paine
On the other hand, Tim Paine told ‘Sen Radio’, “Australia’s performance in the first Test was average. We have improved our performance a lot. I don’t think the England team has the depth to face Australia. Before the series, he said Was that they want hard and flat pitches. They got it in the first Test, but to no avail.”
He further said, “The England team depends on Joe Root to a great extent. Their top order is not able to run on a green pitch. It is going to be very difficult for their batsmen.”
