Gautam Gambhir: Babar Can Set the World Cup on Fire

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has sparked controversy with his statement regarding Pakistan cricket team captain Babar Azam as a top player for the World Cup. During a program, when asked about the best players in the Cricket World Cup, Gambhir, excluding names like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, and England’s star batsman Joe Root, mentioned Pakistan cricket team captain Babar Azam.

While praising Babar, he said that Babar Azam could set the World Cup on fire. He emphasized that Babar has ample time to play his shots, which makes him stand out from the rest. Gambhir added that he has seen many players who have enough time for batting. He believes that Babar Azam’s capabilities surpass those of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson, and Joe Root.

However, Gautam Gambhir’s statement has led to trolling on social media, primarily because Babar Azam’s recent form has been questionable. After scoring a century against Nepal in the early matches of the Asia Cup, Babar Azam struggled to perform well against Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka, scoring 17 (22), 10 (24), and 29 (35) runs, respectively. His performance against India also received criticism. Nevertheless, when considering Babar Azam’s performance in 2023, he has scored 745 runs in 15 matches with an average of 49.67, including 2 centuries and 6 half-centuries. Overall, Babar has scored 5409 runs in 108 One Day Internationals (ODIs) with an average of 58.16, including 19 centuries and 28 half-centuries.
