Shubman Gill Moves Closer to Number One in ODI Rankings

Indian cricket’s young opener Shubman Gill is inching closer to the number one spot in the ICC ODI rankings. Gill played a magnificent century in the second One-Day International (ODI) match against Australia during the three-match series. He shared a partnership of 200 runs for the second wicket with Shreyas Iyer, laying a strong foundation for India’s high score.

With this outstanding performance, Gill has climbed up the ICC ODI batsmen rankings, nearing the top spot. Currently, Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam holds the number one position in the rankings with a rating of 857 points, while Gill is second with 814 points.

Now, Gill has a golden opportunity to claim the number one spot in the rankings ahead of the One-Day World Cup. Before the start of the three-match ODI series against Australia, he needed 200 runs to reach the top spot. Gill scored 74 runs in the first ODI played in Mohali and followed it up with a brilliant century of 104 runs in the second ODI in Indore. He has already amassed 178 runs in the series after three ODIs.

Gill’s exceptional form in the early ODIs of the series places him in a strong position to overtake Babar Azam in the rankings. Meanwhile, Babar Azam is not participating in any series before the World Cup. Therefore, Gill might enter the World Cup as the top-ranked ODI batsman. Gill had previously showcased excellent form during the Asia Cup as well.
