Special Report: Panchak of the death of MLAs in Chhattisgarh!

Vaibhav Bemetariha, Raipur. Panchak of death of MLAs has started in Chhattisgarh! I do not feel good while writing this, but the period that has passed from 2018 to 2023 has not been good for the families of the 5 MLAs who won the elections and reached the assembly. From 2019 to 2023 till now Chhattisgarh has lost its 5 popular MLAs. Every year one MLA has lost his life. Perhaps it is like a sad record from the point of view of the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly.

Assembly elections were held in Chhattisgarh in November 2018. The result came in December. Congress had created history by winning more than one-third of the seats. The Congress returned to power after 15 years, wiping out the BJP from Bastar to Surguja. Amidst the anti-incumbency wave, the BJP was then reduced to 15 seats. Out of these 15, one seat belonged to the only Dantewada from Bastar, but this seat also did not remain with the BJP for long.

first occurrence of death

The new government was formed in December 2018. With the formation of the new government, the preparations for the Lok Sabha elections started from January 2019. In 2019 it was the month of April. During the election campaign in the month of April, there was a big Naxalite attack in Dantewada. The attack was on the then BJP MLA Bhima Mandavi. Bhima Mandavi was killed in a Naxalite attack. A lot of politics took place on this sad incident then. Allegations and counter-allegations followed. Told a political conspiracy, but later when the by-election was held, Dantewada BJP lost and Devti Karma of Congress, who lost to Bhima Mandavi in 2018, won. Bhima Mandavi was the first among the 5 MLAs who died after 2019.

second event of death

After the tragic incident in 2019, the incident of 2020 further damaged the politics of Chhattisgarh. Due to the incident of death in 2020, a wave of mourning ran from Chhattisgarh to Delhi. In 2020, it was the month of May. The Corona period was going on all over the world then. In the last days of May, then the first Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Ajit Jogi got trapped in the whirlpool of death. Not from Corona but from eating Ganga tamarind. Ajit Jogi, who was one of the most popular leaders of Chhattisgarh, had reached the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly by winning 5 seats under the banner of his new party, but he could not stay with his party and party’s MLAs for long. He died during treatment in the hospital on 29 May 2020. This was the second incident of death of MLAs. The by-election was held in Marwahi, the seat vacated by the death of Ajit Jogi. Like Dantewada, the ruling party Congress won the Marwahi bypoll.

third event of death

After 19 and 20, a sad incident happened in the year 2021 as well. The incident of death of another MLA of Chhattisgarh. The month was November and there was news of the death of popular youth MLA Devvrat Singh. This was a deep blow to the politics of Chhattisgarh. Devvrat Singh, who came after winning the election from Jogi Congress, reached the assembly after a long time. Like Ajit Jogi, neither he could stay with his new party for long and with the people of Khairagarh. Devvrat Singh of the royal family died prematurely due to a heart attack. By-election was also held in Khairagarh and once again the Congress got the victory.

In a way, the process of death of MLAs had started. Year after year everything was happening as if Chhattisgarh assembly had got someone’s evil eye. By the way, when the fourth incident of death happened after three incidents, it started to seem like it was real. After 19, 20, 21, this time in the year 2022, the politics of Chhattisgarh got another big blow. Especially the Congress party and the tribal society. In October 2022, the news of the death of Chhattisgarh Assembly Deputy Speaker Manoj Mandavi shook everyone. Along with the public, he was a universal leader among all political parties. Manoj Mandavi died due to heart attack. By-elections were held on the vacant Bhanupratapur assembly seat after his death and the Congress maintained its winning streak amidst the challenge of the Sarv Adivasi Samaj. This was the 5th victory of the Congress in the by-elections held between 2018 and 22. 5th because four by-elections were held due to the death of MLAs, but one by-election was held after Deepak Baij became MP in Chitrakote. Congress had won in Chitrakoot also.
