In fact, despite the anti-Indira wave after the Emergency in Madhya Pradesh, the Congress won 13 of the 19 assembly seats in the district in the 1977-78 assembly elections. During the district division in 1998, when there used to be 10 seats, BJP won 7 seats from here. Then the performance of Congress weakened.
Bilaspur’s stature was such that Ajit Jogi of the district became the first CM of Chhattisgarh, while Rajendra Prasad Shukla remained the speaker of the Chhattisgarh assembly after Madhya Pradesh. At one time there used to be 5-5 ministers from the district. The importance of Bilaspur can be gauged from the fact that Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel himself is in charge of the Congress’s Booth Chalo campaign.
