Team India’s command in Asia Cup and World Cup will remain in the hands of Rohit Sharma. But after the World Cup, Rohit Sharma can leave the ODI and Test captaincy. The main reason for Rohit Sharma taking such a step is his increasing age. Rohit Sharma is 36 years old. In such a situation, Rohit Sharma’s career will hardly last for one more year. That’s why Rohit Sharma can leave the ODI captaincy immediately after the World Cup.
Who are ahead in the captaincy race
Hardik Pandya is taking command of Team India in the shortest format only after the T20 World Cup last year. Hardik Pandya has not been officially appointed as the captain of Team India. But in view of the success in IPL, after the World Cup, Hardik Pandya can be appointed as the new captain of Team India in ODIs along with T20.
In the Test, however, there is a bigger challenge in front of India to choose a new captain. Till a year back, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Bumrah were being seen as the next Test captains. But the problem of injury to all the three players has taken away these options from India. For the time being, Shreyas Iyer is ahead in the race to become the next captain in Tests. Apart from Iyer, Shubman Gill can also claim the captaincy. However, Gill needs to improve his performance outside Asia.
